Events in Granada

FIESTAS CORPUS 2012 (04.06. - 10.06.2012)
The Festival of Corpus Christi is the main fiesta of Granada. Every year it starts on Monday at 12 midnight with the lighting, that is, with the turning on of thousands of light bulbs on the entrance gate of the showground.
It was institutionally created by the Catholic Monarchs as main festival after the conquest of the city.
The parade (“procesión”) in honour to the custody that contained the body of Jesus Christ was formed by all the parrish churches of the city and its valley who, furthermore, were the responsible of covering with sedge the surface allover the route. Since its beginning, the archbishop Hernando de Talavera tried to get all the sectors of the population involved so in the parade where also Moorish “zambras” as well as different carts with plays and theatre representations. The “procesión” became bigger and bigger; so in 1573 a Sinodic Constitution had to be established to determine the order of the suite and the type of “shows” that could go with the “procesión”.
According to the documents, since 1632 there was also the “paseo de la ciudad” (“walk of the city”) which consisted in a party parade with demons, giants, big-heads and the mythical Tarasca.
This two “procesiones” are still performed today. On Wednesday, we can see “La Pública” aimed to children and youngsters starred by La Tarasca, a statue of a woman on a dragon dressed with the clothes that would be fashionable that season. And, on Thursday, the main day, the religious “procesión” which is chaired by the throne made by the goldsmith and sculptor from Granada Miguel Moreno.
There is still a tradition of raising altars along the route of the “procesión”.
At Bibrambla square the so-called “Carocas” are shown: satirical cartoons about the events which happened in the city during the previous year.

OUR NEW OFFER! Spanish & Yoga en Granada
Combine a Spanish course in Granada with Yoga lessons. We offer Yoga classes in addition to a general Spanish course in collaboration with the school, Yoga Estudio.
The studio was founded in 1993 by Eladia Martínez. Eladia is a certified instructor who offers Iyengar based Hatha Yoga, which is probably the most recognized technique in the Western world. Yoga Estudio is authorized by the master, Bks Iyengar.
If you want to continue your Yoga practice during your Spanish course in Granada, or try Yoga for the first time, this is the course for you. The main objectives of the course are to learn Spanish, to practice Yoga and have contact with local people, as you will join a local group Yoga class. Our Yoga programme is focused on providing a spectrum of alternatives to meet the needs of every student. Whether you are a beginner or have years of experience, our intention is to offer you the necessary tools to enrich and deepen your practice.
Classes: 4 Yoga lessons of 45 minutes per week in addition to a general Spanish course.
Levels: all Yoga levels; in small groups.
Starting dates: every Monday (except August/September).
Course duration: from 1 to 24 weeks.
Timetable: to be confirmed.
Course Price: 40 € per week.

¡Ha muerto el escritor mexicano Carlos Fuentes!
El escritor mexicano Carlos Fuentes ha muerto este martes a los 83 años de edad en Ciudad de México.
El escritor recibió el Premio Cervantes en 1987 y el Premio Príncipe de Asturias en 1994. Entre las obras más destacadas de Fuentes, que fue muy crítico durante toda su vida con México por no haber construido una democracia más auténtica, figuran títulos como "La muerte de Artemio Cruz" y "Terra Nostra".
En 2008 el escritor español Juan Goytisolo dijo que Carlos Fuentes logró junto con Gabriel García Márquez y el resto de los "autores del boom latinoamericano" que la literatura española de nuevo reflejara la modernidad después de que España diera la espalda a la cultura universal durante siglos.

¡Muchíssimas gracias por una semana fantástica en Granada!
Muchíssimas gracias por un curso de español fantástico, bien organizado e interesante.
Otra vez estamos impresionadas por los buenos guías que han contratado. José es genial y a los alumnos les ha caído muy bien y ha logrado darle a los alumnos tanta inspiración y despertado su curiosidad por la historia y la cultura española.
Las profesoras de los dos grupos también han sido muy inspiradoras y nuestros alumnos han aprendido muchísimo y desarrollado su lengua de una manera impresionante en tan poco tiempo. Ahora solo falta darles las gracias a las madres de casa que recibieron a nuestros alumnos con tanto cariño y también contribuyeron a darles una imágen bonita del país.
