"What a terrific school”

I've just completed a week as a complete beginner in Escuela Montalban. I have to say that I had a terrific experience of the school.

The Spanish classes were split up into different levels, indeed during the week that I was there I was in a class of only 2 which was great for learning and there were numerous opportunities to hang out with the other students during breaks.

I couldn't have asked for a better teacher in Paco, who was extremely funny, patient and an extraordinarily gifted educator. The entire class was in Spanish, which, if I had known in advance might have made me a bit worried about whether I could understand but it totally worked. Somehow with even my low level of Spanish it wasn't a problem. Paco was able to communicate extremely effectively even to a class of total beginners.

The school itself has a great atmosphere and is definitely one of the highlights of Granada for me. The teachers are very engaged, funny and relaxed. There are students from all over the world which makes it a really fun place to study. The teachers made paella for us one lunch time, and gave us an opportunity to bring food from our respective countries (or whatever we could source in Granada) which was a great way of meeting people from different cultures.

This is without actually getting into some of the unique selling points of the school. There is a fantastic itinerary of optional electives and trips. Indeed if you are booking through an agent I would advise contacting the school directly (the office staff have excellent English) so you can time your flights to go to as many of them as possible. I don't know if they vary them so I won't list them here, but they were really special.

I had no issue with the language school. The agent I used to book the trip, golearnto, got the dates of the course wrong (it was 5 instead of 7 days) which made things unnecessarily difficult with flights but I put the blame for that on the agent, so that's the only thing to look out for.

In summary, if you are thinking about signing up for this school then my categorical advice is do it. I can't think of anything to improve.

NEW: Learn Spanish and dance Salsa in Granada!

This month we have introduced this new combined course into our Spanish course programme.

In addition to the Spanish classes at our school, we offer Salsa lessons in collaboration with a dance studio in Granada. So you can dance Salsa during your holiday, meet locals, make new friends and improve your Spanish while going out.

The Salsa lessons are focused on Salsa en Línea and Bachata Sensual.

You can dance the Salsa on 1 Los Angeles Style and the Salsa on 2 New York Style. The aim here is that the basic Salsa steps are danced in a line - in contrast to Salsa Cubana, in which couples rotate around themselves. In addition, you will also practice steps and special techniques of Bachata Sensual.

03.05.2015: El Día de la Cruz (The Day of the Cross)

El Día de la Cruz (The Day of the Cross) is celebrated in Granada on 3 May and is one of the most popular holidays in Andalusia.

Every year, thousands of visitors come from all over Spain to experience this holiday. According to legend, an alabaster cross was erected in 1625 in the district of San Lazaro, and all of the locals celebrated its commemoration by singing and dancing around it.

Dia de la Cruz

The tradition continued in the most well-known districts of Granada, the Albaicin and Realejo; children began to build small altars with a cross and decorate them with pottery and copper objects.

Some of these traditions live on to this day. One of the traditions that still remains is the placing somewhere in the decorations of the Cross of an apple with a pair of scissors inserted into it; this is done so as to try to avoid any criticism that might be made of the decoration of the Cross.

On this feast day, it is common to find all over Granada crosses that are decorated with carnations. Neighbourhood associations, guilds, schools, even town halls create their own cross. The atmosphere is unmatched. The Granadines, adults and children alike, dressed in flamenco costumes, walk around the city visiting various crosses and, in this way, celebrate this important feast of Granada.
