Celebration of San Cecilio in Granada

On 1 February is the day of the Patron of the city of Granada. It is a tradition to visit the catacombs and the Monastery of Sacromonte.

San Cecilio is celebrated on the first Sunday of February. On this day there is a pilgrimage that goes up to the Sacromonte to the catacombs of the saint. Here people celebrate this day with picnics, music and dancing.

San Cecilio was one of the three envoys sent by St. Peter to Spain for evangelization. When they were gathered in the catacombs of this mountain with nine other priests they were surrounded by the Romans and martyred. His disciples wrote the story in a lead sheet and hid it between two stones, one white and one black, that were thrown into the river Darro.

After that date were built an abbey and collegiate near the catacombs. During the pilgrimage, the girls of marriageable age touch the white stone if they want to get married or touch the other side of the stone if they dont want. So you know, the choice is yours.

Maroma Peak (Province Malaga)

A hike up to the Maroma Peak: Combine a Spanish course in Granada with hiking in the surroundings. From the top of the Maroma you can enjoy the beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea.

For those of you who enjoy hiking, La Maroma measures 2018 meters. It is obviously not the Sierra Nevada, but to hike up to it´s peak will definately be a challenge. You will not have excessive difficulty, but you will have to walk up as well as climb up certain areas, but you do not have to be an expert to do this.
The Tejeda Sierra is joined to those of Almijara and Alhama which form a natural border between the provinces of Malaga and Granada. We are amongst a natural environment where you can nejoy nature, it´s views and flora and fauna.

My Spanish course at Escuela Montalbán

When I first came to Spain on the 3rd of September I was only know two words in Spanish: “Ola” which means “Hello”, and “Gracias”, which means

”Thank you”!

I got enrolled on the Spanish courses in Escuela Montalban on the first week of October and now after one month I am happily able to communicate in Spanish with locals and foreigners who speak the language! It’s true that every week I was improving since we had classes every day and the most important thing is that the instructors were teaching us with example that we were facing in the everyday life in Granada, by using an entertaining and the same time interesting way of teaching.

I really enjoyed the time in classes and the discussions we had with my classmates and the instructors since we communicated issues which deal with the background of each one and as well issues which deal with the culture and history of Spain, which is without doubt, interesting. What is more, the life in Granada is amazing! This city is so lively, with a great amount of young people studying and so many nice things happening every day. A typical week during my studies in Escuela Montalban apart from classes concluded in fiestas in the magnificent old Moorish quarter of the Albaicín, nice walks in the small paths around the great world-famous Alhambra, relaxing moments in small squares with great views for studying a book or doing homework, open-air yoga classes in a wonderful square called “Huerto del Carlos” and nightwalks for tasty “tapas” in different bars. During the weekends I had the opportunity with the helpful directions of my teachers to visit Sierra Nevada and spend the night in a refugee or to go with my classmates in the sea since from Granada you can easily reach in 30 minutes spectacular mountain or sea sides.

Therefore, I definitely recommend Escuela Montalban and Granada for studying Spanish, you will enjoy it for sure!!!

Muchos saludos!

Trevenque Peak, Granada

Combine a Spanish course in Granada with hiking in the surroundings. If you need tips, have a look at Paco's Facebook.

From the top of the Trevenque you can enjoy the beautiful views of Los Alayos and the Veleta. The Trevenque is a sharp mountain with steep sides, belonging to the limestoned Sierra Nevada. Here, half a hundred strange plants live; some of them can only be found round the peak of the mountains. For that reason, this area has great ecologic value.

Walking and Hiking in Andalusia

Combine a Spanish course in Granada with a hiking weekend near Cortes de la Frontera (Ronda).

Visitors to Andalusia's enchanting mountain villages usually come to relax and enjoy a peaceful time away from the pressures of modern life. Numerous tracks wind away from through mountains, cork forests and farmland where you can enjoy spectacular scenery undisturbed by traffic and everyday noise. The countryside of Cortes de la Frontera is part of the Grazalema Natural Park and is a paradise for botanists and ornithologists.

Walking at all levels is available through the mountains, using trails and tracks that have been in existence in some cases for hundreds of years, where you really capture the feeling that you have stepped back in time. Nature has been seemingly left to its own devices, and the area is a treasure trove for those interested in flora and fauna, set against an azure sky with Griffon Vultures soaring, the warm air rising from the steep mountain slopes - a photographer's dream.
