Lorca and Granada at the Generalife Gardens

Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía premieres "Llanto por Ignacio Sánchez Mejías" for the Lorca and Granada 2012 series.

Antonio Canales collaborates in the show, which will be on the bill together with "Metáfora" at La Alhambra’s Generalife Gardens from July 18th to August 31st.

“At five in the afternoon”. That is the crucial verse in "Llanto por Ignacio Sánchez Mejías", the elegy which Federico García Lorca wrote in 1935 for his bullfighter friend, gored to death by the bull Granadino in Manzanares. And now that poem has become the inspiration for the new show by the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía, the second one directed by Rubén Olmo. As a special collaborator for the occasion, Antonio Canales joins the lineup of the public Andalusian company, which includes young bailaores like Patricia Guerrero and Eduardo Leal. Together with the choreography "Metáfora", the show will be part of the double program offered by the Lorca y Granada 2012 Series from July 18th to August 31st at the auditorium of the Generalife Gardens, in the setting of La Alhambra.

FIESTAS CORPUS 2012 (04.06. - 10.06.2012)

The Festival of Corpus Christi is the main fiesta of Granada. Every year it starts on Monday at 12 midnight with the lighting, that is, with the turning on of thousands of light bulbs on the entrance gate of the showground.

It was institutionally created by the Catholic Monarchs as main festival after the conquest of the city.

The parade (“procesión”) in honour to the custody that contained the body of Jesus Christ was formed by all the parrish churches of the city and its valley who, furthermore, were the responsible of covering with sedge the surface allover the route. Since its beginning, the archbishop Hernando de Talavera tried to get all the sectors of the population involved so in the parade where also Moorish “zambras” as well as different carts with plays and theatre representations. The “procesión” became bigger and bigger; so in 1573 a Sinodic Constitution had to be established to determine the order of the suite and the type of “shows” that could go with the “procesión”.

Granada

According to the documents, since 1632 there was also the “paseo de la ciudad” (“walk of the city”) which consisted in a party parade with demons, giants, big-heads and the mythical Tarasca.

This two “procesiones” are still performed today. On Wednesday, we can see “La Pública” aimed to children and youngsters starred by La Tarasca, a statue of a woman on a dragon dressed with the clothes that would be fashionable that season. And, on Thursday, the main day, the religious “procesión” which is chaired by the throne made by the goldsmith and sculptor from Granada Miguel Moreno.

There is still a tradition of raising altars along the route of the “procesión”.

At Bibrambla square the so-called “Carocas” are shown: satirical cartoons about the events which happened in the city during the previous year.

Holy week in Granada

The Holy week processions start on Sunday, 01.04. and finish on Sunday, 08.04. The Granada processions are quite spectacular. If you've never seen a Holy Week procession before, it can be quite breath-taking. Each hermandad (literally "brotherhood") has their own procession and is understandably extremely proud of their figures of Christ and the Virgin Mary.

During the processions, the floats ("pasos") with the figures are carried on the shoulders of the "costaleros", and are followed by processions of "nazarenos" in long, hooded gowns, the penitents (carrying figures of the cross on their shoulders), and women and girls dressed in black traditional Spanish costumes carrying candles and crosses.
The weight of the paso depends on the size and it can take as many as 40 men to carry. If you come to Granada in the weeks leading up to Semana Santa you might possibly run into one of the practice sessions and might wonder what a group of men are doing trying to carry a wooden structure on their heads with bags of sand.
It is hard to choose between the different processions, but perhaps the important ones are the "Silent Procession" on Thursday (when the street lights along the route are turned off and the procession takes place in absolute silence) and the "Gypsy Procession" on Wednesday which goes through the Albaicín/Sacromonte quarter. During the Gypsy Procession, bonfires are lit along the route and stops are made every so often for "saetas" (traditional songs to the Virgin) to be sung.
