The International Festival of Music and Dance of Granada

The International Festival of Music and Dance of Granada will take place from 19.06 to 10.07.2015.

During the Festival we will be able to enjoy several of the great works of music history: all 32 of Beethoven’s piano sonatas played by nine Spanish pianists; the depths and lyricism of the sonatas for violin and piano performed by the violinist Anna-Sophie Mutter; Mahler’s Symphony no. 1 conducted by Eliahu Inbal with the Orquesta Sinfónica de RTVE; Sibelius’ Symphony no. 2 with the Paris Orchestra conducted by Jukka-Pekka Saraste; Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody at the hands of Joaquin Achúcarro, and Bruch’s violin concert performed by the French violinist Renaud Capuçon. And to cap the cycle of symphony concerts, the Paris Orchestra will play three beautiful pieces which symbolise the French 20th century repertoire conducted by Josep Pons.

Also featuring on the Festival’s programme is music from the Renaissance. There is baroque music, the classical guitar of the master Pepe Romero and the flamenco guitar played by Vicente Amigo and the young Juan Habichuela “Nieto”, the minimalist music of Wim Mertens and music sung in pursuit of a better world by Noa with the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada. The flamenco voice of Estrella Morente returns to the Palace of Charles V in all its profundity.

The International Festival of Music and Dance of Granada also has commissioned La Fura dels Baus to produce an up-to-date version of El Amor Brujo.

Music and verse appear in the hands of two outstanding actors: John Malkovich will premiere his theatrical version of Beethoven’s Egmont with the Orchester Wiener Akademie and, on the fifth anniversary of the birth Saint Teresa of Jesus, the Spanish actress Blanca Portillo will star in a poetry night in the Court of the Myrtles reciting poems by the saint to the accompaniment of music of the period.

Festival de Musica y Danza Granada

But the Festival is not only music. It is dance too, and choreography. We will enjoy the great works of classical dance with the Vienna Opera Ballet. Liam Scarlett will present a new version of Carmen with a choreography danced by the Norwegian National Ballet. Víctor Ullate will bring us his “dance of life”, Samsara, looking eastwards, while Antonio Najarro and the Spanish National Ballet return to the Generalife Theatre with Spanish and flamenco dance.

We will also experience the avant-garde production by Sasha Waltz & Guests who has choreographed The German Requiem by Brahms, one of the most representative works in the history of European music. Performed by the Berlin Radio Choir, it offers a special vision of this work, known as the Human Requiem, in which the audience is immersed in and surrounded by the music of Brahms.

Flamenco at the Alhambra Gardens

The Flamenco dancers Fuensanta "La Moneta" and Manuel Liñan are representing the Flamenco performance "Duende" in Granada from 23.07. to 31.08.2013.

The Federico García Lorca Flamenco cycle has been organized by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Alhambra since 2002. This year the Alhambra presents "Duende", a show with the dancers Fuensanta La Moneta, Manuel Liñán and many guest artists.

The show is a homage to the poet Federico García Lorca and to Manuel de Falla and Enrique Morente.

The show is inspired by the music of Manuel de Falla and Enrique Morente and is based on the values set down by Federico García Lorca in his famous lecture on the Cante Jondo.

The International Festival of Music and Dance of Granada

The this year 62 Festival is going to take place from 21 June to 12 July.

The International Festival of Music and Dance of Granada is a living instrument of cultural activity all within a common framework of emotion.

Emotion expressed in artistic offerings of outstanding quality; emotion in the enjoyment of the most beautiful and original spaces in Granada and its province; emotion in the discovery of what Granada has to offer in the way of unique experiences in cultural tourism which each year are discovered by more people from every corner of Spain and abroad.

The Alhambra in Granada is this Festival’s most impressive sign of identity and a unique setting for its performances. At the beginning of summer hundreds of spectators enjoy the music and the dance, infused by the aroma of the gardens of the Alhambra and under the impact of the amazing Nazrid, Renaissance and Romantic architecture which has made of Granada the so-called Gateway to the South.

And side-by-side with the performances that take place in the Alhambra there is a broad mosaic of artistic events which extends throughout Granada and its province and is available for public enjoyment: this is the FEX. The most spectacularly monumental sights of the city, together with the contemporary buildings, the many squares and street corners make the Festival a popular event enjoyed by thousands.

We hope that you will take part in these activities in the Alhambra’s palaces and the gardens, at the century-old sights of historic Granada and in the modern city too.

May Crosses in Granada

Friday, 03.05: Large, happy crowds of locals and visitors alike fill up the center and the Albaicín to capacity during this colorful celebration of religion and spring.

Special groups, much like the Holy Week brotherhoods, slave over the annual decoration of their respective cross, which they then erect in a public square or courtyard. "Casetas" are set up nearby each cross (in the very same plaza or courtyard) where you can find the typical jubilant Andalucían antics and shenanigans: eating, drinking, partying, and dancing sevillanas.

Aside from these marvelous florally-decorated temporary crosses, fixed crosses also get a lavish makeover, as do the various plazas and courtyards. With people to impress and awards to be won, decoration during Cruces de Mayo becomes almost a marathon sport- you'll easily see why it's one of Granada's world-famous festivals!
