The Alpujarras is a valley located at the foot of Sierra Neada National park whose name comes from the Arab al-bugscharra, which means “land of grass”.
The Alpujarras find themselves between the provinces of Granada and Almeria, thus providing them with scenic landscapes, dotted with Berber-style white towns that connect to one another through hiking routes and paths. These will allow you to discover the Alpujarras completely on foot, especially in spring and autumn, when the colours of nature are far from plain.

Tapa Tour with Marisa
Meeting point: School
Price: each student pays his consumption
A tapa is a type of appetizer which is served when you order a drink. Serving tapas to customers is a typical Spanish tradition preserved through the whole of Spain. In some cities, such as Granada, the tapas are free. They can vary from just a few peanuts or a small dish of olives, to almost a mini meal in itself. One of the most enjoyable pleasures of the Spanish culture, is to go out with your friends for tapas. You usually only stay in each tapas bar for one or two drinks, so that you can go to a series of different bars in one evening. In some tapas bars you can choose your tapa, whereas in others, there is a set list of tapas that you get according to the type which is being served.

The region of mountain villages known as Las Alpujarras clings to the southern flanks of the Sierra Nevada, cloven by deep, sheltered valleys and gorges which run down towards the Mediterranean. The Alpujarra is famous throughout Spain because of its unique mini-ecology. Its terraced farmlands are constantly watered by the melting snow from above, constituting a high-altitude oasis of greenery which stands in dramatic contrast to the arid foothills below. This is ideal hiking terrain for adventurous travellers.

The Día de la Cruz (Day of the Cross) or Cruces de Mayo (Festival of the May crosses) is celebrated in Granada on May 3rd and is one of the most popular festivals in Andalusia.
On the 3rd of May and as every year, Granada has got dressed up in frills and flowers to celebrate May crosses. In courtyards and squares, the air is alive with tradition. But where does the May Crosses tradition come from?
All cultures have celebrated the arrival of spring with rituals of devotion to the gods of nature. Coinciding with these dates, in the Christian tradition in May the crosses festival is celebrated. In Spain it appeared on all of the calendars, being associated with the legend of discovery by Saint Helena of the true Cross of Christ.
In Granada, the tradition became deeply rooted, and lived on with great intensity from the moment the city was conquered by the Reyes Catolicos onwards. Following the intimate tradition of Arabic carmen houses, the crosses of May were originally celebrated in the courtyards of the homes. Altars were built there where the crosses raised and were adorned with flowers and with objects displayed beside them which conferred distinction and prestige.
Ceramic pieces, copper, manila shawls and everything which would suggest abundance was selected for exhibition on these occasions. Plants, fruit, grains and everything related with the typical vegetation of this time of year also had its place.
In the neighbourhoods, the less powerful classes organised collective crosses in squares and courtyards, where the neighbours lent their best possessions for adorning the altars.

The Chapel of the Catholic Kings was conceived as a burial site intimately linked to the Cathedral. It is built with a single nave, a transept with little development and a choir at its feet, for the functions of a pantheon. In it you can appreciate both its simplicity and its wealth thanks to the generous endowment of the queen. The Royal Chapel houses the mortal remains of Fernando de Aragón and Isabel de Castilla. Under the tombs there is a small crypt of marked austerity, in which are deposited the real, lead coffins, identified by the initial of each name on the cover.
